HOW REFUGE STARTED
Tara never liked tea or coffee. While many around her enjoyed their morning cup, she found herself searching for something else – something comforting, indulgent, and just as energizing. It was in this search that she discovered a new passion: chocolate.
But Tara’s love for chocolate wasn’t just about the flavor. She saw an opportunity to create something more—a way to combine her love for rich, decadent treats with her deep commitment to making a difference in the world. Tara’s heart had always been drawn to causes that supported those in need, especially the fight against modern-day slavery. She wanted to build a business that would not only share the joy of chocolate with the world but also raise awareness and contribute to ending human trafficking.
That’s how Refuge Chocolate was born. Tara started small, crafting premium chocolate products with the intention of using part of the profits to support anti-slavery initiatives. Every bar and every sip of Refuge Chocolate was a reminder that a little bit of sweetness could make the world a better place.
Over the years, Refuge Chocolate grew from a small passion project into a thriving business, beloved by customers who shared Tara's values of compassion and justice. And now, as the business moves into a new chapter, it has been acquired by the Magee family, who are just as committed to carrying Tara's mission forward. With their support, Refuge Chocolate will continue to craft delicious products that inspire change, one bite at a time.
The Magee family is excited to take the torch from Tara and continue to build upon the foundation she set. We hope to expand the reach of Refuge Chocolate and make an even bigger impact—supporting both our community and the fight against injustice. Together, we’re creating a legacy of sweetness with purpose, and we can't wait to share the journey with you.
